Homework for Between
Rehearsals in 2015

In mid November of 2011 Lee revised the status of the various songs in our active repertoire, classifying them into the following three groups: Current Songs, On-the-Fence Songs and Dropped Songs (that we almost never do now).
Every so often she adds new songs and downgrades older ones.
In her words, “Here is our repertoire, in order of what we sing most, at the moment:
the starred ones are sung at almost every gig
.”

Notes on the January 21st Rehearsal

Lee was fighting off sickness, so we had a slightly abbreviated rehearsal.

We started the rehearsal working on our newest song, Donde Estas Yolanda.
We worked our way through the whole song, and got to be pretty hot.
We all need to pull back in the bridge – gentle but firm!

We spent the rest of the first half working on Eternal Flame.
We ended up singing it three times, and Lee took us through the dynamics.
We are now nicely hushed in the second verse, but the guys are dragging a lot.

After the break we worked on a few of our current songs:

  1. With a Little Help (From My Friends)
(Lee has yet to provide the new versions of the scores and MP3 files.
We sang it twice, and Lee said it came close to being brilliant!
The guys really must study their MP3s hard, especially for the verses.)
  2. The Way You Make Me Feel
(It was fairly good, but the guys need to remain both strong and steady to the end.)
  3. I Think I Love You
(Lee said that this was really very good.)
  4. Never Gonna Give You Up
(We ended up not singing this one because Lee was dying,
so we ended the rehearsal a few minutes early.)

We had another excellent turnout this week.

Notes on the January 14th Rehearsal

We spent the entire rehearsal revisiting a number of our current songs.

  1. With a Little Help (From My Friends)
(Lee commented that it was basically there, but very scrappy, after singing it twice.
Lee will be doing a new version of the scores and MP3s, so keep an eye out.
The altos really need to make the most of their Janis Joplin moments.
The guys really must study their MP3s hard, section by section.)
  2. I Think I Love You
(We sang this one off book and it was not bad.
The altos must make their presence felt in the leads by shining out.)
  3. The Way You Make Me Feel
(It is critical that everyone listens for and keeps time with the bass ground.
Lee would like us to go from scores to cheat sheets, so need to create them.)
  4. Eternal Flame
(We really belted our way through this one. It is clear that we know our parts,
but now it is definitely time to add dynamics to our performance.)
  5. Never Gonna Give You Up
(We sang this one off-book and Lee said that it was well done.
However, we all need to really study our MP3s – there will be a test.)

We had an excellent turnout, even if the animals were restless all evening!

Notes on the January 7th Rehearsal

Lee has started the new year with another new song for us: Donde Estas Yolanda
by Manuel Jiminez Fernandez, and made famous by Pink Martini.
We spent most of the rehearsal working on this song, and effectively learned it all.
Scores and MP3 files are now available.

We finished the rehearsal by singing several of our current songs:

  1. Eternal Flame
(We sang through this one twice because the first time was draggy; we warmed up.)
  2. I Think I Love You
(We sang this one off book and it went surprisingly well.
The guys need to stay loud for the first two repetitions of the ending.)
  3. Never Gonna Give You Up
(We sang this one off-book and Lee said that it was really very good.)

We had a great turnout for this first rehearsal of the year, and it was great
to welcome a number of new faces – the men are strong!
