Folka Voca Choir Gig History 2015

Skip all the fluff, take me straight to the index of 2015 gigs,
or get me out of here via the site navigation.

Starting in the spring of 2009, it was decided that every six weeks or so we would replace the regular rehearsal with a performance rehearsal at a worthy venue such as an assisted living facility. Because these performance rehearsals will be at the regular rehearsal time on the regular rehearsal day, we hope to have an effectively full turnout.

Julie Fletcher kindly agreed to undertake the task of organizing these gigs. If you have any ideas for a possible booking, please feel free to contact Julie. When you do, please provide her with a name and a telephone number for the appropriate contact person, as well as the identity and address of the possible venue.

Note: it has to be the regular rehearsal timing, or reasonably close to it – starting at 7 p.m. if possible. Also, although we will perform for free if push comes to shove, we would much prefer that the venue contribute a small honorarium from their entertainment budget. The choir does not make a profit, and all monies go to defraying the expenses that the Ottawa Folklore Centre incurs to keep us going. If the event is a fundraiser, we always require an honorarium.

Fab Ones, this just in from Lynnie, Soprano Extraordinaire,
about the post-concert part-tay; please email her if you plan on attending.

Hello everyone,

Marty McCurdy has graciously agreed to host us at his home for a post-concert party on May 30. It will be a pot luck party, standing room only, so if you plan to come, please bring something that is easily eaten while standing, drinking and chatting, preferably in one bite!
Please also bring along the beverage of your choice.
If you want to be a truly excellent guest, please bring your potluck contribution ready to serve,
on your own serving dish, with any utensils required (and remember to take it home).

His home is located at 160 Aylmer Avenue, one street north of Sunnyside,
and several blocks west. It's a healthy walk from the church,
so you may wish to drive closer if you've got a weighty food contribution!

In order to give Marty an idea of the numbers expected,
please let me know if you plan to attend (by email please – czunder@rogers.com).
Spouses/partners are included, if they wish to come!

September 23rd Parliament Hill

Lee has been asked to host a sing-a-long on Parliament Hill
next Wednesday evening, September 23rd,
much like the 613 choir she is now hosting monthly.
They need a choir (VOX) to sing too!
This is a completely NON-POLITICAL event;
we are participating in an international celebration for Bono’s ONE Campaign.

There is the Facebook link to the event.
SEP 23 Politics Aside Gathering
Please share with all your friends! And come!

We will be learning one song en masse, Imagine.
VOX will sing 2 or 3 songs. Please study and be prepared; bring a light source!
With A Little Help From My Friends
Close Your Eyes
I Think I Love You
It’s really REALLY important for us to be solid on these songs;
even if you think you have them DOWN, study them!

There is a small poster with lyrics;
Feel free to print this out and share.

We will be performing on the stairs; no stage.
I’m assuming it will be challenging to hear ourselves, and also to see our scores.

Bruce has figured out the parking; city hall is only $2 in the evenings, 110 Laurier. Yay Bruce!

Finally; we meet at the stairs at 7:30. The whole event should take an hour.

December 16th at Camilla Gardens

Wednesday December 16th, 6:30 p.m. we have our regular Christmas carol gig
at the Camilla Gardens Retirement Residence, 1119 Bathgate Drive,
Gloucester, ON K1J 9N4. Aim to be there for no later than 6:15 p.m.

Folks, there is a seniors home in the east end, Camilla Gardens, that loves to have us perform for them. These are seniors without family; it means a lot to them that we’re coming. It’s very casual.

Parking is extremely limited, so Lee suggests as many folks as possible car-pool over there.

Here is a map to the Camilla Gardens Retirement Residence: Google map ( PDF )

Dress is casual.

We meet there at 6:30, sing five songs from our repertoire,
then sing carols (Lee plunks them out on the piano).

  1. Gravity
  2. With A Little Help
  3. I Think I Love You
  4. Donde Estas Yolanda
  5. Close Your Eyes

The Gents will sing two songs. Then we all disperse and sing carols
while Lee butchers them on the piano, yay!

There is now a cleaned up version of the Christmas Carol lyrics in the order that
we are going to sing them, so do check the resources page for this New Version.
If you can, take the time to print an extra copy for a resident to use at the sing-along.

THEN off to chez Bob and Lynda Bowes for our party!
It’s a potluck; please bring easy apps and your drinks of choice.
More singing will happen, I promise you, so bring Mamma Mia and Take Me To Church!

Pub Chez Bowes
Because the new incarnation of the Barley Mow has become untrustworthy,
we are inviting everyone over to our house for pub chez Bowes.
We live off of Ogilvie Road, about a 5 minute drive east.
We will provide cheese, crackers, veggies and dip.
You can bring your own drinks and some small snacks.
Not everyone needs to bring a bottle. You can do you what do in the pub
and share with a few people.

Address: 669 La Verendrye Drive
Phone number: 613-744-6807

Directions: after the concert,
1. Head east (turn left) on Ogilvie Road;
2. Continue through the Blair intersection on Ogilvie and drive for about 5 minutes;
3. After crossing Montreal Road, you will go through one stop light,
with Beacon Hill Mall (Shoppers) on your left;
4. Turn left on the next street at the end of the plaza, which is La Verendrye Drive;
5. The house is about one and a half blocks up the street, on the right.

Parking: There is lots of free parking on the street.

Walk through the garage and enter the house from the back of the garage.
