Folka Voca Choir Gig History 2014

Skip all the fluff, take me straight to the index of 2014 gigs,
or get me out of here via the site navigation.

Starting in the spring of 2009, it was decided that every six weeks or so we would replace the regular rehearsal with a performance rehearsal at a worthy venue such as an assisted living facility. Because these performance rehearsals will be at the regular rehearsal time on the regular rehearsal day, we hope to have an effectively full turnout.

Julie Fletcher kindly agreed to undertake the task of organizing these gigs. If you have any ideas for a possible booking, please feel free to contact Julie. When you do, please provide her with a name and a telephone number for the appropriate contact person, as well as the identity and address of the possible venue.

Note: it has to be the regular rehearsal timing, or reasonably close to it – starting at 7 p.m. if possible. Also, although we will perform for free if push comes to shove, we would much prefer that the venue contribute a small honorarium from their entertainment budget. The choir does not make a profit, and all monies go to defraying the expenses that the Ottawa Folklore Centre incurs to keep us going. If the event is a fundraiser, we always require an honorarium.

April 27th Rideau Carleton Raceway
Cat Rescue Network Benefit

Lee originally wrote, “Hello Fab Ones; there is an event that is looking for musical entertainment on Sunday the 27th of April; it is a fundraiser at the Rideau Carleton Raceway for the Ottawa Cat Rescue Network. It might be too much to have the entire choir, but maybe 20 voices, 5 from each section? Who can do it?

Subsequently she added, “Fab Ones, the gig of April 27th is at 12:30 p.m.

Sufficient volunteers came forward to make this gig a go.

Folks, this is where we’re going to sing on Sunday; there is a huge parking lot out front,
and we should meet inside the main entrance.
Map to the Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Please arrive no later than 12:30, we will start singing around 12:45!

We’ll do these songs, in this order:

  1. Close your Eyes
  2. Sunglasses
  3. Never Gonna Give You Up
  4. Boogie Fever
  5. California Dreamin’

Dress code: Bright top, dark bottoms, but I really don’t care a lot; just no jeans,
not too casual, and no tiaras. We want to look as fabulous as we sound!

Stay tuned! And does anyone want tickets for the brunch?
They are $30 (sorry, a charity = no freebies).

June 1st Annual Concert

Lee has decided that our annual concert will be on Sunday June 1st
at Sunnyside Wesleyan, with the show starting at 7 p.m.

Other acts are:
The Sunday Beatles class
The Church of Disco
The Gentlemen’s Club
The Mexico Dream Team

We will now be singing a total of ten songs, in the following two sets,
so these are the MP3s that you should be studying, with your music in this order.

Set the First:

  1. Never Gonna Give You Up
  2. California Dreaming
  3. Mercy
  4. I Wear My Sunglasses At Night
  5. Boogie Fever

Set the Second:

  1. Father Figure
  2. Chain of Fools
  3. A La Nanita Nana
  4. Billie Jean
  5. Close Your Eyes

Dress is bright, solid coloured top and dark bottoms – not jeans.

Please be at the church no later than 6 p.m. so that we can warm up,
do some practicing, rehearse the tricky bits, be instructed, and get organized.
If a couple of guys could come a little earlier, that will help with the set-up.

Lee has reminded us that there can be no noise
(talking or whispering) once we are on stage.
