Folka Voca Choir Gig History 2012

Skip all the fluff, take me straight to the index of 2012 gigs,
or get me out of here via the site navigation.

Starting in the spring of 2009, it was decided that every six weeks or so we would replace the regular rehearsal with a performance rehearsal at a worthy venue such as an assisted living facility. Because these performance rehearsals will be at the regular rehearsal time on the regular rehearsal day, we hope to have an effectively full turnout.

Julie Fletcher kindly agreed to undertake the task of organizing these gigs. If you have any ideas for a possible booking, please feel free to contact Julie. When you do, please provide her with a name and a telephone number for the appropriate contact person, as well as the identity and address of the possible venue.

Note: it has to be the regular rehearsal timing, or reasonably close to it – starting at 7 p.m. if possible. Also, although we will perform for free if push comes to shove, we would much prefer that the venue contribute a small honorarium from their entertainment budget. The choir does not make a profit, and all monies go to defraying the expenses that the Ottawa Folklore Centre incurs to keep us going. If the event is a fundraiser, we always require an honorarium.

February 8th at the Lord Lansdowne
Retirement Residence

We have a gig at the Lord Lansdowne Retirement Residence, 920 Bank Street
(Bank and Holmwood), on Wednesday February 8th, at 7:30 p.m.
They’d like us to sing for 45 minutes.

The venue is a ten minute walk from the church, up Bank Street, across the canal, and past Lansdowne Park. There is no on-site parking, only neighbourhood street parking.

WARNING: There is a concert at Lansdowne Park this night,
so on-street parking will be a major headache – arrive early!
We sing at 7:30, be present and ready by 7:15 at the latest!

Here is the set list for the gig. There are eleven songs on the list; depending on

  1. our type of audience and
  2. how much time we have,

we may drop one or two as we go. But this is the order:

  1. Both Sides Now
  2. La Isla Bonita
  3. Drive My Car
  4. Fields of Gold
  5. You’re All I Need (to Get By)
  6. Last Train to Clarksville
  7. Close Your Eyes
  8. Papa Was A Rolling Stone
  9. Crystal
  10. Time After Time
  11. Calling All Angels

Please make sure that you have your music where you can find it.

Because of the late start, there will be no second half rehearsal,
we will retire to the Barley Mow immediately after the performance.

March 28th at the Palisades Ottawa
Retirement Residence

Lee is coming down with a cold and is reluctantly following choir rules.
Diehards are welcome to meet at the Barley Mow for 8 p.m.

Note: this is a rescheduling from the original March 7th date
because of the preemption of the two immediately prior rehearsals.

We have a gig at the Palisades Ottawa Retirement Residence,
480 Metcalfe Street at Isabella, on Wednesday March 7th, at 7:30 p.m.
They’d like us to sing for 45 minutes.

Here is the set list for the gig:

  1. Both Sides Now
  2. La Isla Bonita
  3. Drive My Car
  4. Fields of Gold
  5. You’re All I Need (to Get By)
  6. Last Train to Clarksville
  7. Close Your Eyes

December 12th at Camilla Gardens

Wednesday December 12th, 7 p.m. we have our regular Christmas carol gig
at the Camilla Gardens Retirement Residence, 1119 Bathgate Drive,
Gloucester, ON K1J 9N4. Aim to be there for no later than 6:45 p.m.
Note: they have an outbreak of flu, so this gig has been cancelled.
We will have a regular rehearsal at the church instead.

Folks, there is a seniors home in the east end, Camilla Gardens, that loves to have us perform for them. These are seniors without family; it means a lot to them that we’re coming. It’s very casual.

Parking is extremely limited, so Lee suggests as many folks as possible car-pool over there.
If there is someone who can’t get a ride, let Lee know
and she’ll see what she can do to make it happen.

Here is a map to the Camilla Gardens Retirement Residence: Google map ( PDF )

Dress is casual.

Before the carols we will be singing this short set of our songs:

  1. You’re All I Need (to Get By)
  2. The Water is Wide
  3. Close Your Eyes
  4. Drive My Car
  5. Calling All Angels

There is now a cleaned up version of the Christmas Carol lyrics in the order that
we are going to sing them, so do check the resources page for this New Version.
If you can, take the time to print an extra copy for a resident to use at the sing-along.

After the gig, we will be returning to the church
for a short regular second half rehearsal.

December 19th Choir Christmas Party

Lynnie Zunder (soprano extraordinaire) has organized this year’s choir Christmas party,
and has provided the following details.

FOLKA VOCA CELEBRATES THE SEASON!

You’ve already been invited to join your fellow choir members for an evening of music
and fun on Wednesday, December 19, but we thought you might like more details, so...
(read to the end – we need something from you...)

We will meet at the Wesleyan Church as usual at 7:00 for an hour of singing. We’ll wrap up
at 8:00 and reconvene at the Barley Mow to enjoy good food, cocktails and laughter.

The Barley Mow has traditionally put out a great spread, with something for everyone. Some of the tasty treats we can look forward to this year are: assorted slider sandwiches, teriyaki meatballs, smoked salmon rolls, pesto tomato goat cheese canapes, thin crust pizza triangles, deep-fried dill pickles and of course our beloved nachos and chippers.

Cost to partake of the Barley Mow buffet is $10.00 (drinks are on you). If you do not wish to eat you are more than welcome to come along for cocktails (but don’t try snatching the nibblies!).

Lynnie Zunder and Martha Guy are coordinating this event and will be collecting the Barley Mow money (many of you have already paid – thank you!). Please look for them on December 12 or contact Lynnie by email thereafter at czunder@rogers.com to let her know if you intend to participate (she needs to have an idea of how many to expect).

Now, besides your money, we need some information from you! Please answer the following questions and then cut and paste and send them back to Lynnie at the email address above:

  1. What is your name and vocal section?
  2. Where were you born? If born outside of Canada, have you become a Canadian citizen? (These questions are NOT sponsored by Citizenship and immigration Canada.)
  3. Where did you discover your passion for music?
  4. As a musician have you had any interesting/embarrassing/amazing experiences?
  5. What is your favourite holiday memory? (Christmas/ Hanukkah/ Kwanzaa/ Easter – what the heck??)
  6. What might we be surprised to find out about you?
  7. What is/was your occupation?
  8. Who is the most famous (or inspiring) person you’ve met (and how/when?)?
  9. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
  10. What is the riskiest thing you’ve ever done?
  11. Bonus – what Folka Voca song are you most comfortable with?

We look forward to receiving your answers and putting together this year’s quiz.
It is sure to be a fun-filled evening!
